2011
EMAT is founded
A group of Tanzanian emergency medicine physicians, nurses, and allied health providers establish EMAT in January, following the launch of the country's first full-capacity Emergency Department and residency training program at Muhimbili National Hospital and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam.
2011
Permanent registration
EMAT receives permanent registration from the Registrar of Societies of Tanzania in May.
2021
Growing membership
EMAT's membership grows to 73 qualified emergency physicians practicing across more than ten regions of Tanzania.
Partnership
Abbott and the Abbott Fund have invested in Tanzania’s healthcare system through a US $125 million partnership with the Government of Tanzania. That partnership included establishing the first Emergency Medicine Department and residency training program in East Africa at Muhimbili National Hospital — the same program that catalyzed EMAT’s founding.
