About EMAT
Extending the emergency medicine training model pioneered at Muhimbili National Hospital to regional referral hospitals across Tanzania.
Emergency medicine in Tanzania began at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, where EMAT’s founding members established the country’s first full-capacity Emergency Department and residency training program. The EM Regional Expansion Program carries that same model outward — helping regional referral hospitals build the trained workforce, protocols, and triage systems needed to deliver timely emergency care closer to where patients live.

First Milestone — 2017
In 2017, EMAT began realizing this vision by collaborating with the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, and Abbott Fund Tanzania on training, capacity building, and technical expertise supporting the renovation and equipment procurement needed to launch a full-capacity Emergency Department at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital.

Regional Referral Hospitals
Extending emergency care training and mentorship beyond Dar es Salaam to referral hospitals in Tanzania's other regions.
Local Provider Mentorship
Pairing experienced Muhimbili-trained emergency physicians and nurses with regional teams for ongoing, hands-on support.
Curriculum Adaptation
Adapting EMAT's short courses and training materials to the staffing and resource realities of regional facilities.
Sustainable Partnerships
Building long-term relationships with regional hospitals and health authorities rather than one-off trainings.
The next site in EMAT’s regional expansion vision is Mt. Meru Regional Hospital in Arusha Region. We invite stakeholders with similar interests to join hands in supporting these initiatives, complementing the Government’s work to improve emergency medicine services across Tanzania.
