About EMAT
A welcome from the President of the Emergency Medicine Association of Tanzania.

Dr. Juma Mfinanga
President, EMAT
On behalf of the Executive Committee and the entire membership, welcome to the Emergency Medicine Association of Tanzania.
EMAT was founded in 2011 by a group of Tanzanian physicians, nurses, and allied health providers who saw, first-hand, what a dedicated emergency care system could mean for patients — following the launch of the country’s first full-capacity Emergency Department and residency training program at Muhimbili National Hospital and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam. What began as a small community of practitioners has since grown into a professional association whose members practice across more than ten regions of Tanzania.
Our work is guided by a simple conviction: that every person in Tanzania deserves access to timely, competent emergency care, regardless of where they live. We pursue that through training the next generation of emergency providers, advancing research grounded in the realities of our health system, advocating for the specialty at every level, and building collaboration across institutions and partners — including our long-standing partnership with Abbott and the Abbott Fund.
None of this progress would be possible without the physicians, nurses, students, and partners who give their time and expertise to EMAT’s mission. Whether you are a member, a prospective trainee, or an organization exploring how to support emergency care in Tanzania, I invite you to learn more about our work and to get involved.
Thank you for your interest in EMAT.
